Hi folks,
I was diagnosed with gout last September and I've had two major attacks, each lasting three weeks since then. I'm 6'1″ and 185lbs, almost 100% vegetarian (only eat chicken or fish once a week, no red meat)., no alcohol of any kind, no animal fats, in other words, a very “boring” diet and a very patient wife. Actually, I eat a very healthy diet to control a liver ailment that I have (Non-alcoholic SteatoHepatitis, or NASH for short) and the diet seems to be working. For over 3 years now, I've been able to keep my liver enzymes in the “low normal” range. My younger brother has gout and has had one acute attack.
Onto my “gout history”… Let's see, my uric acid level is 6.5mg/dL and I started taking Allopurinol at 100mg once a day two days ago. All of my other labs looked good, which is why the Dr agreed to try the Allopurinol, but we're watching my liver panel to be sure my liver enzymes stay at the proper level. My gout is primarily in my two large toes (podagra), but I've had an attack in my shoulder and in my wrist, but at the time those attacks occurred, I did not know it was gout.
Honestly, the gout pain is the worst pain I have ever experienced. My brother is a retired cop/detective who had been shot and he said that the gout is more painful than when he was shot in the abdomen at point-blank range with a shotgun!
I'm trying to keep a positive attitude and manage my diet and activity level very carefully. My wife is a gourmet chef and she prepares many tasty, healthy dishes for me. I found that lentil soup, salmon and asparagus tend to trigger gout pain, so I avoid those foods.
I'm hoping to hang out here, if you guys will tolerate me and my stupid questions. I've been learning about gout (and NASH) and I hope to learn more and eventually be able to help others with their gout. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I drink tart cherry juice, mixed with lemonade almost every day. I drink 1 gallon of PowerAde Zero (no calories, minimal sweetner) every day. I do not use any artifical sweeteners, I use Stevia in my coffee, tea and lemonade. I do not eat any “fast food”, fried food, gravies, or rich foods. I used to eat about 1 gallon of lentil soup every week, but that provoked my 1st gout attack and the Dr said that lentils have too much protein/purine for me to tolerate that much, so I only eat small amounts of lentil soup now.

I have gotten relief from the pain by taking Aleve (Naproxen)
It doesn't get rid of 100% of the pain, but it makes the pain manageable…
At the 1st attack, the Dr gave me an injection of Prednisone, followed by a week's worth of Prednisone pills and that was a horrible experience. Evidently, I don't tolerate steroids too well and they made me sick and I had severe kidney pain. Just what you need during a gout attack, right? The Aleve is over-the-counter, inexpensive and fairly effective. I take 2 x 220mg every 4 hours until the severe pain subsides…
