Thank you for this long, time consuming, detailed and feely given reply on a complicated condition, that is difficult for the layman to unravel. It is all food for thought and no pun intended! It is a very useful site for people dealing with this challenging problem. Regards G

Thank you for the response and in answer to your questions first, the feet tingling did go and the fever and dizziness was a severe but single event. Currently, knees are stiff and burning and the consultant wants to run a blood test to rule out rheumatoid arthritis. I have had stiff knees for many years, probably work related, but my feelings are it is worse due to the “allopurinol effect.”

My diet change was fairly drastic. I used to eat meat almost every day, including offal, seafood, etc. I changed to a mostly vegetarian diet with a small portion of chicken and salmon twice a week. I drink water, coffee and teas, no sugary drinks, but some biscuits and cake. Where is all this too much fructose supposed to come from?

This does seem to me, to give credence to the idea that diet is only a small part of the high uric acid condition and that the vast bulk is from the body itself. Still confused on the issue of crystals dissolving because of what the consultant said about “forever.”

How do you know when you are “cured” and what is a while? I will be sticking with the drug for now, but there does seem to be contradictory viewpoints on the mechanism of these crystals, joints, etc.

Lastly are the self test UA gadgets worth buying?

    Thanks again!

    Tingling toes with Allopurinol

Today I am experiencing what feels like tingling across the underside of my toes on both feet. Taking allopurinol for 15 weeks now, and subsequent flare which lasted for about a week ended 2 weeks ago. Had the sensation only on the gouty toe foot initially, but now both. No swelling or problem with big toe! Is this a common symptom? Thanks for any advice. I think this site provides a lot of help and good advice to people with this problem.

I am also new to this forum and have made my first post recently. I cannot take any NSAID’s because of any allergy to them. I do not like taking anydrugs unless I have to and am taking allopurinol daily and recently caved in on the colchicine when things got bad, but am off that now.

I have gotten a lot of relief from cold therapy. For years because of my job I had back pain (which is a lot better since I retired from 5 days a week!). The regular use of an ice pack was my go to relief and it worked well.

During my recent and now ended flare, I filled a bowl with cold water enough to cover the foot and emptied a tray of ice in it. I then put a towel on the floor next to the bowl. I sit in the armchair with my foot submerged for some minutes and then extract. The process can be repeated. Do not submerge for too long and monitor how red you skin is, so as you do not overdo it. It takes the heat straight out of the foot and will reduce the inflammation, giving instant relief. Afterwards, you can the raise the foot on a footstool and your organs will not be affected!

I lost a twin brother at age 54 to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. People often think its all about fat in the diet, but sugar is often a bigger
culprit. It effects the liver like alcohol if the dose is big enough.

From what I have read on this disease, if we are willing to be disciplined and take the medication required to reduce the uric acid, I understand you can get rid of gout for good.

Thanks for the reply. My doctor wrote back saying they could be ganglion cysts. Does anyone know how to tell the difference between these and tophi? It seems very odd these bumps ( now 4 total) should emerge on joints (or they were already there and just got bigger) and when, hopefully, my uric acid crystals are beginning to dissolve. I thought maybe uric acid was coming out of joints and depositing on the surface somehow, but do not think this is possible!

Another episode in this strange condition follows. The other night after dinner I began to feel unwell, went to bed early and within the minutes began having fever/delerium/dizzy symptoms and had to have help to walk to the bathroom. I was totally out of it and somewhat alarmed. The next day I felt gradually better. I did read you can get flu like symptoms with gout. I have never had such extreme symptoms come on so quickly. Gout is one crazy condition and you feel a very bad joke has been played on you.

I am looking forward to my new body when all this uric acid is dumped!
